8 Church Street, Old Catton
Used to be a Police house in 1950.
Sue Jarvis tells us "I remember it as a police station and the last village policeman was PC Bray. He was your typical village bobby and used to cycle round the village every day ( before it became a suburb) checking the houses of folk he knew were on holiday or had been ill etc. He was quite an accomplished artist and really loved this village. The piece on the front of the house used to read Police, and everyone knew they could go to him with problems and he would help them. So between him and the vicar Rev. Hedley-Davies who lived in the big house at the top of Fifer's Lane, all problems were solvable. Those were happy days when Fifer's Lane was a lane and the loudest noise heard was the RAF Lightnings taking off from the airport which was still operational then."

In closed in 1897 after complaints about the noisy pub noise during the Sunday services. It had a skittle alley and tea garden tea garden out the back. The house is now divided into two seperate houses.

The old cottages on the street were let at a peppercorn rent to staff and estate workers of the Buxton family whose home then was at Catton Hall (the house that overlooks Catton Park.)
